When Wonsulting first started, we were growing immensely on LinkedIn. We were helping millions of job-seekers with the job search strategies we teach, whether it was folks who were students looking for internships, those who signed up for our Wonsulting Services, recent graduates looking for their first job, or seasoned professionals looking for their next career pivot. One of the biggest factors for our growth was hosting the Wonsulting Project 2020 which gave 4,500+ job-seekers opportunities for the summer which translated to them getting offers at companies including Google, Adobe, Facebook, Deloitte, Goldman Sachs, and more.

However, it wasn’t all “smooth sailing”; at the end of 2020, I remember thinking to myself “If LinkedIn didn’t exist, what else would we have?”. When I spoke to others about making videos on TikTok to help job-seekers, the feedback was usually the following:

“TikTok only has Gen Z’ers”

“You can’t get clients from TikTok”

“You’re wasting time, it’s just for kids”

However, that feedback was the opposite when we started creating content on the platform, growing to now 575K+ followers with most of them coming in a 4-month span.

How did we do it?

In this article, I talk about some of the strategies we did to grow and have a global reach of 30M+ monthly.

‍

It All Starts By Just Starting

When I first started making TikTok content, it was difficult; I didn’t know what to post about, so I decided to post random TikTok content regarding tips, my story, and motivational content.

I released my first videos, and they did decent however, I found that some videos would reach thousands and others would reach only hundreds. It would make me feel like the content I was making wasn’t valuable to my audience., causing a mental lapse of “imposter syndrome”: the feeling that many job-seekers feel when getting rejected from their dream companies just as I did.

However, I learned from content creators PG13Pottery and ZiaUpdates who pushed me to create more content on the platform. I had my first “viral” video which was a story regarding myself and my managers from Kohl’s. It went on FYP and had 815k+ views with people commenting regarding how “wholesome” it was.

I then started making more videos but then stopped for a timeframe because it wasn’t a priority and “I didn’t have time”. I realized that I did have time; I just wasn’t allocating any towards it.

When we got rejected by Forbes 30 Under 30 in the Final Round, this is when I got motivated to show the world what Wonsulting truly was: a career consulting firm that turns EVERY underdog into a winner. I started creating more content in December with multiple videos hitting millions of views and growing 90K+ in December.

In life, every goal is achieved by just starting. If you have an idea or want to do something, just start it.

Identifying Your Niche

One of the key components of growing on TikTok is identifying your niche; when I first started creating content, I was posting random tips with snippets of “funny videos”; due to posting in multiple niches, the content interactions and engagement declined significantly.

Referencing the top picture, there are 6 videos with all different topics: One is about the Presidential Election, another is LinkedIn Tips, one is pulling a joke on Jerry, and another on resume tips. I learned that if you post about too many different topics, your followers will disappear because they follow you mostly to learn more about your niche (hence why they’re following you).

When I started having a focus on career tips, the views dramatically changed. People could see what our niche was and followed to gain insights based on that niche. This is why it’s important to identify what your niche is early on so you can build content based on it!

‍

Being Consistent and Posting Regularly

“Post 5 times in a day for a week. Trust me, it works”

These are the exact words that Ahmad Zia told me when making content. At first, I thought he was crazy; posting 5 times in a day seems insane.

However as Gary Vaynerchuk says regarding how to make 100 pieces of content in a day, it’s not as hard as you think. When I was first starting off, I then created 3-5 videos everyday for 2 weeks and saw skyrocketed growth from hundreds of viewers to millions. This got me into a habit of making content, as I would spend the weekends using a ring light and recording myself speaking about career tips; it took me about 2 hours to make 10-15 videos! Here’s what I’d recommend if you’re making content:

  • Set a day where you make your content: Whether it’s on TikTok, LinkedIn, or Instagram, this will help you create content organically. You can also bounce off ideas based on each piece of content you create!
  • If you can’t think of videos to make, do replies: If I can’t think of any content for the day, I’ll look at my TikTok comments and do a reply based on a comment which asks a question. This helps your content creation because your audience is giving you ideas and, at the same time, you’re making content based on it
  • Search Hashtags on TikTok: One idea you can do is search the specific hashtag that your niche is in and look at what other people are doing; you can then get ideas based on their content. Be sure to credit them if you do!

The reason why it’s important to be consistent and post regularly is that it not only helps with growing your branding and following but also shows how dedicated you are to giving insights to your audience; at first, I was worried because I thought I would “lose followers” and people would question why I posted so much.

‍

Your audience and community will stay with you as long as you listen and continue providing value. Now, I post about 1-2 times a day usually during my peak hours at 10:00AM and 8:00PM PST!

‍

Doing Stitches/Duets of Viral Videos Looking For Jobs

When I was on my FYP, the videos that I would always see every day were videos of people looking for jobs; I would usually scroll past them and simply click the “like” button and move on. I learned that these videos could be stitched, and instead of scrolling to the next video, I instead decided to create content based on those videos to help the job-seeker land a job.

I did this a total of 5 times with all 5 landing offers a few weeks later in tech, whether it was at Google or a small startup. One of the videos regarding helping a job-seeker named Sam accumulated 2M+ views, leading to her getting a job a week later!

When you’re able to stitch viral videos, they do significantly better and are not only pushed out on FYP but also show the knowledge you’re able to give based on that topic.

‍

Building a Personal Brand with Baby Yoda

Star Wars is one of my favorite movies and The Mandalorian my favorite show. One day, I was at the Disney Store with some of my friends and I came across this Baby Yoda pen; I bought it with the intention of using it just to write but turned out to be useful with growing Wonsulting’s brand on TikTok.

After making many videos, I decided one day to use the “Grogu” pen as a pointer. During the videos when giving advice, I would point at what I was talking about by saying the following:

“This is what you should put on your resume”

“Go on LinkedIn and search xyz”

“Step 1 to crushing your interviews, you do xyz”

181814619_134311962014335_8412744075063520553_n.jpeg

After doing this for a couple of videos, people would ask where I got the Baby Grogu pen from, as it would create engagement from my audience. The Baby Yoda pen is now a staple to the Wonsulting community and brand!

Conclusion

Making content should be fun and exciting; that’s what we always think of it as at Wonsulting. By making content, we’re able to engage and provide value to our audiences; I hope you all will do the same. Some notes to consider when making content on ANY platform which is as follows:

  • Provide value to your audience always: Post content when you have insights that can be shared
  • Engage with your community: I receive 300+ messages a day on all my social media platforms but do my best to respond specifically on my Instagram; if you’re able to provide answers to your community, you’ll grow an even stronger one.
  • Focus on the 99%: There will be times when you have people comment on your content with different opinions than you or negative feedback; however, take this as a grain of salt. Focus on the ones who already support you versus trying to please the ones who already don’t.
  • It’s okay if someone copies your content: This happens to me on every platform, whether it’s using a strategy that I’ve personally created during my own job search or to help others; however, what I say all the time is that content SHOULD be shared. It’s okay if someone uses it, they’re providing the value you started and they’re continuing to share it with the world
  • Take mental breaks from social media: If you feel like your life is consumed by using platforms such as TikTok and LinkedIn, take breaks. It’s vitally important to put your health first before anything; your followers will be waiting for you at the end of the tunnel.

See you on TikTok!
