A couple of weeks ago, I came across a job-seeker who not only received a scam job offer but also - took out all the money in her bank account.

‍

It was a sad story (and if you want to hear more about it, I made a video here)

But how does one even find if a job is a scam vs. not? 

‍

Let’s get into it.

‍

🚨 Alarm Bells: The Fake Check Scam

‍

I know how exciting it can be to land that remote job offer. 

‍

They even send you a check to buy a shiny new computer and other essentials! 

‍

But wait—let's hit the pause button. 

‍

Before you go cashing that check and splurging on Amazon, we've got to talk about the Fake Check Scam.

‍

Imagine you just spent $2,000 on all the goodies you'll need for your new job. 

‍

The next thing you know, your "employer" says, "Uh, you owe us that money back. The check was fake." 

‍

Nightmare fuel, right?

‍

Here’s steps you must take before accepting any offer OR if the company asks for your bank information:

🏦 Know Your Bank's Policy

Remember, banks often release temporary funds before the check actually clears. If that check ends up being a dud, guess who's on the hook for all that money? Yep, that's right—you.

‍

👍 Rule of Thumb: Trust But Verify

Before cashing any check, ensure it's from someone you trust implicitly. And here's the kicker: never accept a job without having at least a virtual with someone at the company. Get everything in writing, and do your due diligence. Google the company, check reviews, and look for red flags like poor grammar in official documents or vagueness about job responsibilities.

🚩 Trust Your Gut

If something feels off, there's a good chance it probably is. Always trust your gut. Sometimes that internal alarm bell is more reliable than anything else.
